Research Fellow at University of Auckland, New Zealand

Campus: Grafton Campus

Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences
The University of Auckland is New Zealand’s leading university, with a turnover of $1.1bn, including research revenue of over $200m generated across eight diverse faculties and two research institutes. We employ more than 5400 academic and professional staff to support over 41,000 students, making us one of NZ’s largest employers.

We are seeking a Research Fellow to work on a programme of research on a national patient safety intervention.

The research programme
The intervention, funded by the Accident Compensation Corporation, aims to improve teamwork and communication in healthcare teams involved in the care of surgical patients. Our ultimate goal is to improve patient outcomes in New Zealand.

Our intervention engages multidisciplinary surgical teams in challenging and realistic simulated surgical cases that test their ability to share important clinical information, co-ordinate care and work together effectively as a team. Debriefs and supporting resources reinforce the principles of shared mental model, trust and respect and effective communication strategies.

Demonstrating the feasibility and value of the intervention will be key components of establishing this form of multidisciplinary team training into the future in New Zealand hospitals.

The opportunity

  • The successful applicant would be working with an established team of experienced researchers who are experts in the field of patient safety, simulation and teamwork.
  • You would be contributing to a multidimensional research program, applying quantitative and qualitative methods to measure patient outcomes, processes within surgical teams, and processes of implementation of team training within DHBs.
  • Involvement with the project and with the research group would provide the successful applicant with opportunities to develop and extend skills in a range of research methodologies, extend skills in project management and develop expertise in the area of human factors, healthcare education and patient safety research.

The project is housed in the Faculty of Medical & Health Sciences’ School of Medicine, based at the University’s Grafton Campus.

Applications must be submitted online, below, by the closing date of Tuesday 24th April 2018.
