Staff Category: Staff Member (2 positions available: full-time and part-time)
Contract Duration: until 31.03.2021

We are seeking to recruit Author Customer Support specialists to join the Literature Services Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. There are two positions available, one full-time and one part-time (24hours/week). For the part-time position, our preferred way of working would be to work shorter days, 5 days per week.

The Literature Services Team develops Europe PMC, the open database for the life science research literature, in partnership with PMC (USA), and PMC Canada (together known as PMC International). We require two new staff to manage the production processes and communications around articles submitted directly to Europe PMC.

Some articles are deposited in the Europe PMC archive as a requirement of funding by many major funders of life sciences research in Europe, including the European Research Council, the UK MRC and BBSRC, CRUK, and the Wellcome Trust. You will primarily be responsible for managing the accurate and timely processing of submitted manuscripts. You will be the first point of contact for authors and funders, as well as users of the Europe PMC website and conversion service vendors. Working with colleagues, you will help collect data for KPIs to demonstrate the high quality of our systems to interested parties. You will need to balance running article production processes with an ability to communicate effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds. Within the Europe PMC team, we expect you will contribute ideas for improvement, and help with other areas of our development programme as needs arise.

At EMBL-EBI, we help scientists realise the potential of ‘big data’ in biology by enabling them to exploit complex information to make discoveries that benefit mankind. Working for EMBL-EBI gives you an opportunity to apply your skills and energy for the greater good. As part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), we are a non-profit, intergovernmental organisation funded by 24 member states and two associate member states and proud to be an equal-opportunity employer. We are located on the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK, and our 600 staff are engineers, technicians, scientists and other professionals from all over the world.

Qualifications and Experience
To fulfil this role you will have at least a bachelor’s degree, and have knowledge of XML mark-up processes. Experience and understanding of publishing production would be beneficial, as would experience in assisting authors to publish their work. You need to be computer literate, highly organised and detail oriented. You will be willing to use technology to optimise workflows and be able to anticipate problems/issues, communicating these effectively to the team, as appropriate.

This is an excellent opportunity to work in a friendly, international and supportive team that is committed to providing excellent open literature services. Training will be provided, therefore we will consider computer-literate candidates that have limited experience with XML mark-up but have a strong commitment to fulfil this role within the Europe PMC team.
