Assistant/Associate Professor of Social Entrepreneurship – Roskilde University

Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as assistant professor/Associate Professor of Social Entrepreneurship from 1 August 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position as Assistant Professor is limited to 3 years.

The Department of People and Technology is involved with development of sustainable solutions, and with experimental approaches and support of people’s active commitment. The Department is covering human, society, health and IT scientific fields as well as planning, intervention and design inclined fields.

Research and education in Social Entrepreneurship has its organizational place at the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. The Centre carries out research, teaching, counselling, development work, evaluation and documentation in a number of areas related to social innovation and social entrepreneurship. It works within a broad approach to social entrepreneurship and includes related concepts such as how the global and technological development affects welfare and work conditions, social enterprises, social economy, innovation, social value and social design. It has a particular focus on citizenship and civil society and the importance of inter-sectoral partnerships and hybridity in efforts aiming at societal change and new welfare solutions on both an individual and organizational level. The researchers of the centre work from an interdisciplinary basis to critically illuminate how social entrepreneurship can be the lever of new solutions to problems raised as a cause of the societal and global development. The interdisciplinary approach involves different knowledge areas, including sociology, psychology, management, economics, culture, history, learning, organizational theory, subjectivity theory, etc.

Roskilde University has two educational programmes in social entrepreneurship: A Danish part time master’s programme and a full-time international master’s programme.

Responsibilities and tasks
The assistant professor’s work will primarily include research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication and research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within [field]. In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position also requires share of knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in public debate. To a limited extent this may also include performance of other activities.

An assistant professor is also expected to complete the educational training programme for assistant professors at RUC (up to 220 hours).

An associate professor’s tasks may also include performance of research management, educational guidance and supervision of assistant professors as well as academic assessment work.

The ideal candidate for the position is expected to

  • provide a research profile and publications that addresses the intersections of social entrepreneurship, social design and social innovation in private, public and/or civic organisations
  • be interested in developing a strong research profile in social entrepreneurship as well as contribute in developing the research field and particular research profile of the Roskilde University
  • undertake teaching and supervision at the part time Master in Social Entrepreneurship and the full international master’s program MA in Social Sciences in Social Entrepreneurship and Management

Qualifications 
Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent within social entrepreneurship or related research areas, such as social innovation, social sustainability, hybrid organisations, third sector and civil society organisations, welfare service development. Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required:

Assistant Professor:

  • Qualifications to communicate and disseminate research results to peers and well as to the broader public
  • Experienced within interdisciplinary approaches to research and education and more specifically with teaching and supervision of problem oriented or problem based project work at a university level
  • Danish language skills. In case the candidate does not have qualifications in Danish language, we expect the candidate to obtain such qualifications within the first two years of service.

Associate Professor:

  • Documented research and teaching qualifications corresponding to what can be achieved through satisfactory appointment as an assistant professor in relation to the above subject area(s).
  • Experience with education in relation to projects, multidisciplinary work etc.
  • Qualifications to communicate and disseminate research results to peers and well as to the broader public
  • Experienced within interdisciplinary approaches to research and education and more specifically with teaching and supervision of problem oriented or problem based project work at a university level
  • Danish language skills. In case the candidate does not have qualifications in Danish language, we expect the candidate to obtain such qualifications within the first two years of service.

Both assistant and associate professors shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills and to be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Assessment
In the assessment of candidates for a position as assistant professor consideration will be given to; research topics cientific production,

  • research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education,
  • other academic experience e.g. from organizing research conferences or seminars,
  • ability to contribute to development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
  • ability to contribute to the development of research, education and outreach at a national and international level. 

In the assessment of candidates for a position as associate professor consideration will be given to; 

  • research topic,
  • scientific production beyond the contribution from the PhD,
  • research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education development and management,
  • academic experience basis, preferably including international academic experience, e.g. from reviewing or editing academic papers and/or from organizing research conferences or seminars,
  • ability to contribute to the development of the department’s internal and external cooperation,
  • ability to contribute to the development of research, education and outreach at a national and international level.

Terms of employment 
The employment is on full time, 37 hours per week and you will refer to Anders Siig Andersen, Head of Department. The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and – later on – their assessment.
